What Countries Would Be Included in The USA’s New Travel Ban?

Immig6

In the first Trump administration, a travel ban was enacted that was primarily aimed at countries with Muslim majorities. During the second Trump administration, another travel ban is being considered. If implemented, the new travel ban will affect far more countries. In specific, the administration is targeting countries with inadequate or sparse vetting practices. As a result, dozens of countries will be impacted by new U.S. travel bans and restrictions.

If you are worried that new travel ban regulations will impact your ability to come to the U.S. or if you are wondering how the restrictions will impact you if you are already in the country, speaking to an experienced attorney can be helpful. Who Will Be Impacted By a New U.S. Travel Ban?

As many as 43 countries will be impacted by new U.S. travel bans. The countries will fall into one of three categories as follows:

Full Visa Suspension: This is the most extreme and complete travel ban, in which countries in this category would lose any and all ability to come to the United States.

  • Afghanistan
  • Iran
  • Syria
  • Cuba
  • North Korea

Partial Visa Suspension: Some immigrant visas may be affected with few exceptions.

  • Eritrea
  • Haiti
  • Laos
  • Myanmar
  • South Sudan

Probation: Countries with deficient security and vetting processes will be able to fix their systems within a 60-day probationary period. Failure to do so will result in the country being placed on the partial suspension list.

  • Belarus
  • Pakistan
  • Turkmenistan

Why is the USA Considering New Travel Bans?

New and more comprehensive travel bans are being reviewed as a result of the perceived national security risks that exist with foreigners traveling to the country. Vetting and screening is important to safety in the United States and to address those concerns, the new administration believes that updated restrictions on a greater number of countries is necessary.

What To Expect if Your Country is on the New Travel Ban List?

Finding out that your country is on the new travel ban list can be upsetting and confusing at the same time as you may not know how you will be impacted. Understanding the implications of the travel bans can help you better prepare for what may be to come.

  • It will likely be harder and more restricted to obtain U.S. visas or renew existing ones.
  • The status of a visa holder in the U.S. whose country is on the list could be affected, particularly for individuals whose country has full visa suspension.
  • Green Card holders are likely safe from the repercussions of the ban. Still, certain activities of a Green Card holder could put their status in jeopardy.
