Syrians Get an Extension until 2025 for Temporary Protected Status

ImmigrationLaw

The U.S. immigration laws and regulations are constantly changing. Recently, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrians has been extended by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for 18 months. Now, the adjusted ending date will be September 30, 2025. As a result, eligible Syrians who have been living in the United States since January 25, 2024, may submit their applications for TPS.

According to the Federal Registrar, DHS reviewed the conditions that exist in Syria and found that the ongoing armed conflict in the region and the extraordinary and temporary conditions warranted an extension.

If you want more information on obtaining TPS or have another immigration issue, our Atlanta temporary protected status attorneys at Shirazi Immigration Law, Inc. can help. When TPS has been granted for nationals in your home country, the experienced and resourceful legal team at Shirazi Immigration Law, Inc. can help you file your TPS application while also exploring other more permanent immigration solutions that will work for you.

What the Extension Means for Syrians Who Want or Have TPS

When the Secretary of Homeland Security determines that certain conditions exist in a particular country that can put a country’s nationals in danger, then that country may be granted TPS.

Some of the reasons that the Secretary may designate a particular country for TPS may include:

  • Ongoing wars and armed conflict
  • Environmental catastrophes or epidemics
  • Other extraordinary conditions that may be temporary

When an individual is given TPS status, they may not be removed from the U.S., will be able to obtain an employment authorization documents (EAD), and may receive travel authorization. Additionally, TPS prevents individuals from being detained by the DHS due to their immigration status. Also, TPS beneficiaries may apply for other immigration benefits or protections.

Some important points about the extension are that new Syrian applicants who want to take advantage of the TPS extension will have to meet eligibility requirements and also demonstrate that they have continuously resided in the country since January 25, 2024. Current TPS beneficiaries will have to re-register so that they can keep their employment authorization. Applicants who filed under the previous designation who are approved will have their TPS and their EAD issued and will be valid through the new date in 2025.

TPS may help you and your family stay safe when uncertainty and disaster have stricken your home country. Though, it is critical to understand what TPS is and what it is not. You will not be granted lawful permanent resident status or another immigration status because you have TPS. If you would like a more permanent status in the country, you can apply while under TPS.
